Additional Chromebooks, Student Lockers, and Family Resources

University Parents and Guardians,

Here are some updates I would like to share with you.

Update on School Closures

KC area schools remain closed until at least April 26.   School leaders and the Mayor's Office will be evaluating the situation in mid April to determine next steps.  It's just too early to tell when schools will reopen.   In the meantime, we all must do what we can to prevent further spread of Coronavirus.

Chromebooks On The Way - Distribution Will Be Friday Afternoon and Saturday Morning

UA ordered over 200 more Chromebook computers this week.  We expect delivery to arrive at the school next week.

For parents still in need of a device that have not yet been able to check out a Chromebook, we will be emailing you a link to sign up for an appointment time either Friday afternoon (April 3) or Saturday morning (April 4) to come check out a computer.   Look for that email to come out Saturday, March 28.  Please check your junk mail, too.   There will be a Signup Genius link in the email and you will be able to pick a time.  There will be more appointments available than total recipients, so we shouldn't run out of time slots.  If a parent has previously indicated they had a computer and internet at home, they will not be included in this process.

To date, UA has checked out 144 Chromebooks.   Between Friday and Saturday, we expect to check out 140-150 more.   We could not have done that without support from board members Bush Helzberg and David Dickey.  Bush and his wife Jamie, donated $50,000 towards the purchase of Chromebooks this week.   David was instrumental in helping UA get a $15,000 grant last week from a charitable foundation.   We know some families have been frustrated by not having a device yet, and we get that.   We got the computers as soon as they could be delivered.   So, we want to thank our parents for being patient, the donors for stepping up, and our IT department for putting in a lot of work to get this up and going.

If you have any technical problems with a UA Chromebook, our IT team can be reached at helpdesk@universityacademy.org.

Appointments Available to Pick Up Student Belongings

Staff worked hard this week to clean out student lockers and desks.  Those contents have been bagged up and arranged by student name.  Many students did not have anything in their lockers or desks, so please consult your student to see if it is necessary to come to the school.

Parents can make an appointment at this link to come by the school.

NOTE:  If you will be coming to UA Friday Apr. 3 or Saturday, Apr. 4 to pick up a Chromebook you can pick up your child's belongings at that time. You do not have to come Monday or Tuesday

UA staff will bring student belongings out to the families (we will not allow any non-staff into the building).   Band students might have an instrument and music to pick up.   There will not be another time to pick up locker contents until school reopens.

Families in Critical Need

If you are a family in critical need of resources, or know of one who is, please reach out to Brianne Phillips, the Director of Student Services, at phillipsb@universityacademy.org.  UA is providing a menu of services, but also working with other agencies to coordinate services across the city.

Hello UA Parents and Guardians,

We understand some of you have not been able to select a time slot to pick up a device on Sign Up genius. If you HAVE NOT been able to sign up for a time slot, please complete THIS SURVEY as soon as possible to help us determine who still needs a device.

We appreciate your patience during this time.

VITAL INFORMATION FROM SUPERINTENDENT KLINE

University Parents and Guardians,

These are trying times for us all.  I recognize all the stress and anxiety we are all feeling.

I have some vital announcements that I must make.

1. UA will be closed until at least April 24, in line with all the KCMO districts and Mayor's office.

Kansas City will start a "Stay-At-Home" order on Tuesday that is expected to last at least 30 days.

2. We will make all efforts to keep or reschedule prom, graduation and end-of-year activities,

should they be affected.   I don't know what the future holds for us in the coming weeks and months, but I know these things are special and deserved opportunities for students, and we will make every effort to afford those opportunities of a lifetime.

3. UA will begin food service programs at four locations starting Monday.  You may choose to come to one of those four locations or go to another school site.  Our information is on our website at www.universityacademy.org.   Once we have a comprehensive list with other school information, we will publish it.  Persons 18 years of age or younger are eligible, and those youth must be present at the time of food service.  Leaving to get school lunches is allowed under the "stay-at-home" order.

4. We will have a second round of laptop checkouts on Tuesday afternoon.  The Signup Genius link will go live on Sunday at 2:00pm.  An email will go out, and the link will appear on our Facebook page and homepage at www.universityacademy.org.   The stay-at-home orders do allow for provisions of picking up learning materials and school lunches.  If we have another distribution that has more demand than available times, we will keep releasing additional computers until we are out.   We have to balance crowd sizes and we can have a small number of staff at a time to be safe and in compliance with city orders.

5. Volunteer inquiries -  We have been blessed and humbled with the sheer amount of people that want to do what they can to help.  The management team will be discussing this Monday.  We want to embrace those that want to help, but also need to balance the health concerns at hand and adhere to the stay-at-home measures our local government is asking us to do.   Starting Monday afternoon, we will have a list of ways people can help available on our website.

6. Grace - We are all going through a historic crisis together, for the first time.  We are going to keep trying our best, but we are inevitably going to make mistakes.  I ask that we all afford one another grace.   UA will not be asking for substantial work to be completed Day 1.  We will ease into this.  Our goal over the coming month or so is to help your child continue to learn and have opportunities for growth.  We will be looking to provide opportunities to help, first and foremost.   We also understand many families are experiencing severe stress through loss of jobs, uncertain childcare, food insecurity, etc.   Myself and our staff will be doing everything we can to help.

I wish all of you and your families the very best in the coming days and weeks.  We are in this together.

Tony Kline, Superintendent

****Original Message****

To make an appointment to pick up a Chromebook on Monday, March 23, you must fill out this form.  It's the only way we can manage this process.

When it is time for your appointment, UA staff will meet you at the doors to the front office to let you in the building.  We are only allowing 2 families in at a time to stay under the mandatory groupings of 10 or less.   The parent or guardian picking up the computer will need to supply their drivers license or state ID to the front desk.  They will then proceed to the computer check out line.

UA has about 400 Chromebooks, and 1,103 students.  Some of the Chromebooks have already been checked out.   So if you have a working computer at home, please allow for others in more need to go first.

Terms and Conditions:

1. The adult who is picking up the Chromebook MUST be a parent or guardian of a UA student.

2. The parent/guardian who picks up the Chromebook must bring their driver's license or state ID

3. The parent/guardian will assume financial responsibility if the Chromebook is lost, damaged, or stolen.

4. There is a limit of 1 Chromebook for every two UA students in the household.

5. If a parent/guardian misses their appointment, they will be scheduled into the next available appointment.  If there are no available appointments, they will be put on a waitlist,

Home Internet Solutions

UA has 30 Sprint hotspots (10gb per month) available for distribution.  They will be on hand Monday afternoon for those with an appointment.

Meal Distribution Plan

UA Announces Meal Distribution Plan - Begins Monday March 23, 2020

University Academy will be preparing and distributing meals in accordance with the federal government’s guidelines.  Meals (breakfast and lunch) will be prepared at University Academy.   UA prepared meals are available to any person 18 or under in the community.   The same applies to meals being served by all schools.  One does not have to a current student of the school providing meals to receive a meal.  Meals will be served Monday - Friday at four distributions sites at the times and locations below.

We want to thank the UA cafeteria staff from (Eliot North America), Calvary Community Center (Pastor Eric Williams), Destiny Life Center (Pastor Cynthia Kivett), and Southeast Community Center (Terry Rynard, director) as well as Apple Bus Company, for helping with this effort.

Locations and Times of distribution:

University Academy (drive through pickup):  11am – Noon, or until supplies last

Calvary Community Center, @ 2940 Holmes Rd:  11am – Noon, or until supplies last

Destiny Life Center, @ 4207 Blue Ridge Cutoff:  11am – Noon, or until supplies last

Southeast Community Center, @ 4201 E 63rd Street:  11am – Noon, or until supplies last

By order of the City, University Academy will be closed to students during the period of March 23 through April 3.   We will re-evaluate the situation closer to April 3 for a reopening timeline.

However, we are excited to continue education virtually during the March 23 - April 3 time frame.   Principals and teachers will be reaching out to families later this week to let you know more about how this is going to work and let you know about great, free resources out there to help your child.    We know many schools around the country are turning to virtual education during this difficult time.   We obviously don't want UA students falling behind, but rather, we want to stay out front.  This will require a total team effort between teachers, parents, and students, but I know we will be up for the challenge.   We understand there will be a lot of questions and probably a few hiccups to start, but we will be understanding, learn fast and get better every day.

More Chromebooks will be made available Monday, March 23!

A UA board member helped line up a generous gift of $15,000 to purchase additional Chromebooks, allowing us to loan out more Chromebooks (laptops) to families in need.   More details to come on the checkout process, which will start on March 23.

Spectrum is making broadband available for free to any student that does not have home internet access.

We will also soon have announcements on how we plan to deliver school lunches to community-based distribution centers.  Our goal is to get school lunches out starting March 23.

Please check your email and the UA website for more info in the coming days.
